Whisnu Santika: “I Feel Deeply Grateful to Represent Indonesia”

Ahead of his Tomorrowland sets, Whisnu Santika sat down with us to talk about his upcoming album, Map of Feelings, and flying Indonesia’s flag worldwide.

If Indonesian Bounce has crossed your radar, you’d have likely heard of Whisnu Santika. The trailblazing DJ and producer has emerged as one of the defining figures behind the genre that fuses an intoxicating mix of Brazilian funk, global grooves, and breakbeats, tapping into Indonesia’s rich musical heritage.

His production prowess shines across standout tracks such as “Are You Ready,” “Lov3,” and “Mangu.” These songs have helped establish the blueprint for a movement that’s steadily reaching audiences beyond Indonesia.

“Indonesian Bounce is my own interpretation of UK breaks,” he said. “I wanted to give it a sound that feels fresh and represents my own musical identity.” What sets it apart, he explained, is “the groove and rhythm.” He added, “The drum patterns have a distinctive bounce that feels very danceable, while the melodies and vocal hooks are intentionally simple and repetitive, making them easy for people to connect with.”

By incorporating “Latin-inspired percussion and rhythmic elements” into his productions, Whisnu has created something that feels globally influenced yet unmistakably Indonesian. “It’s not just about combining different influences,” he said. “It’s about creating a sound that has its own identity. It reflects my musical journey and shows how global dance music can evolve through a local perspective.”

That sense of identity extends beyond the music itself. Although many have associated him with Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, Whisnu revealed that he actually grew up just outside the city.

“It wasn’t as busy or chaotic, and I think that balance has had a huge influence on who I am as an artist,” he said. “Some of my best ideas came late at night, when everything was silent. That’s when I explored different genres, discovered new references, and let my imagination wander without distractions.”

That contrast between a peaceful environment and the energetic buzz of the city has become central to his creative process. “My sound is driven by high energy, but it’s always created from a place of reflection,” he said.

Over the years, Whisnu Santika has taken his homegrown sound from Jakarta to stages around the world, representing a new wave of Indonesian electronic music on the global music circuit. This year, he’ll return to Tomorrowland in Boom, Belgium after making his debut in 2024. He also looks to perform at the first-ever Tomorrowland Thailand in Pattaya, adding to his incredible momentum and marking another milestone in his career.

“I feel deeply grateful to represent Indonesia at Tomorrowland,” he said. “It’s a platform where I can proudly show that Indonesian artists have something unique to contribute to the global scene.”

In addition to showcasing his own catalog, he views each performance as an opportunity to champion the country’s creative community. He said, “If my journey can encourage younger artists back home to keep creating fearlessly and believe that they, too, can reach audiences around the world, then that’s one of the most meaningful parts of this experience.”

That mindset reflects in the message he’ll bring with him this year: “Global Sound, Indonesian Soul.” He said, “While our music can connect with people across the world, we should never lose the identity that makes us who we are. I hope more Indonesian artists feel proud to bring their own culture, perspective, and individuality onto the global stage.”

On the studio side, Whisnu Santika has built his reputation on high-energy club records, but he’s now entering a new creative chapter with a forthcoming album, Map of Feelings, due later this year. “To me, the intersection between electronic music and Indonesian pop is where energy meets emotion,” he said. “I wanted those two worlds to exist together instead of feeling separate.”

Inspired by the personal stories fans have shared with him over the years, Whisnu said, “Those conversations made me realize that the relationship between my music and my audience has always been much more emotional than I initially thought. That became the foundation of Map of Feelings. I wanted to embrace that emotional side more openly while still staying true to the energy that defines my sound. My goal was to create electronic music that people could dance to while also giving them songs they could genuinely connect with on a personal level.”

Recently, he dropped the first single, “Aku Harus Pergi,” a heartwarming track featuring Ari Lesmana that revealed a more introspective side of his production. Rather than doubling down on high-octane Indonesian Bounce, Whisnu Santika is using this project to bridge the worlds of electronic and pop music, exploring themes of emotions, storytelling, and self-discovery.

“I wanted to remind people that, at the end of the day, I’m human,” he said. “Just like everyone else, there are times when I feel exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed and need to take a step back to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with myself.”

Working with Ari further reinforced that perspective. “Sometimes the most powerful songs don’t come from trying to sound perfect; they come from being completely honest,” Whisnu said. “That’s probably the biggest lesson I took away from working with him: not to be afraid of vulnerability.”

As Southeast Asia’s electronic music scene continues to evolve, Whisnu Santika sees limitless potential ahead. “More artists are producing original music instead of only playing international records, and audiences have become much more open to discovering sounds that come from this region,” he said.

While he believes that Indonesia’s dance music scene still has plenty of room to grow, he’s confident that collaboration and creativity will continue driving its evolution. He said, “If we continue supporting one another and pushing creative boundaries, I’m very optimistic about where not only Indonesia, but Southeast Asia’s dance music scene is headed.”
