For months, controversy has been swirling around "Rubberz," a genuinely terrible synthpop pastiche with faux-Morrissey vocals that somehow became a breakout hit for LA rapper Fenix Flexin, a longtime member of Shoreline Mafia. Before the song was officially released, some listeners were already raising questions about whether it was AI-generated based on advance snippets Fenix shared, a theory Fenix and producer Purps On The Beat vehemently denied. Over the past couple months, "Rubberz" has remained wildly popular, even rising to #58 on the Billboard Hot 100, as evidence mounts that the song was mainly the result of AI prompts.Last week the hip-hop producer Medasin posted a detailed breakdown alleging that "Rubberz" was "fully" AI-generated using a program called Treblo, formerly known as Sonauto AI. Medasin's videos on the song demonstrated how easily he could replicate the "Rubberz" vocal style using Treblo, showed the software recycling various lyrical motifs from "Rubberz," and pointed out that one of the audio snippets for "Rubberz" had "Sonauto" in the filename.
