Supergirl star Milly Alcock has commented on directors Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott’s criticism of superhero movies, saying she understands their point of view.

The Oscar winning directors each made headlines in recent years by criticising the success of superhero movies, which have been the dominant genre in Hollywood for over a decade.

In 2023, Scorsese described them as a “danger to our culture”, and Scott has previously dismissed them as “boring as shit”, saying: “Their scripts are not any fucking good.” The comments have sparked a debate on the value of the genre in cinema, with Christopher Nolan and James Gunn sharing their views.

Alcock is due to star in the DC comics adaptation Supergirl, the second in the newly revamped DC Universe after last summer’s Superman. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she was asked about the remarks made by both directors, and responded with understanding. “I get it. They’ve been around for-fucking-ever making phenomenal films,” she said. “Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.”

Supergirl is released in cinemas on June 26, and co-stars Jason Momoa as the mercenary Lobo. The first full trailer for the movie has been released, which you can watch above.

The Australian star shot to fame as Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first two seasons of Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon. Last year, she revealed that when she first started on the drama, an unnamed crew member said they wanted to hire an acting coach for her.

She jokingly recalled to talk show host Jimmy Fallon: “It just confirmed everything that I kind of know to be true, which is that I’m not very good at my job. I was like ‘I can’t do this, this is terrible, this is a big mistake’.”
