That puts it just behind James Cameron’s epic, which has earned $2.26billion (£1.65billion) during its initial theatrical run and subsequent re-releases. Released in 1997, Titanic was a romantic drama starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as lovers who meet aboard the ill-fated vessel. The film won 11 Oscars, including Best Film, and became the first movie to surpass $1billion (£732million) at the worldwide box office. It remained number one on the all-time list until it was dethroned in 2009 by Cameron’s follow up, Avatar, which still holds the crown with $2.9billion (£2.1billion).
