Somna Branches Out Beyond Trance on Latest Album, ‘Pathways’

Somna explores the reaches of melodic bass, hard dance, and more while touching hearts with his progressive house and trance side on his latest studio album, Pathways.

Sticking in one genre lane used to be the recipe for success, but recent years have seen artists flip the script and open themselves up to some sonic exploration. Some use genre-switching to stay current with trends, while others see it as a way to buck monotony and let their creativity soar. For trance and progressive house legend Somna, the latter is what drove him forward when creating his latest artist album, Pathways.

According to Somna, the tracks on Pathways date back to a time when he was reconnecting with music and rediscovering his passion for DJing across multiple genres. “Each of the three EPs released in the lead-up to ‘Pathways’ represented a different direction, a different influence, and a different version of who I am as an artist,” he shared. “Rather than staying confined to one sound, ‘Pathways’ is about exploration, embracing the freedom to move between styles, and letting creativity lead the way.”

After the brief intro to the album, you’ll find yourself right at the start of Somna’s dive into melodic bass. “Touch The Sky” with Alan Fullmer and RUNN, “I Miss You” with SABAI and RUNN, and “Oxygen” with H4lo and Jordan Grace are all oozing with vocal moments that tug at your heartstrings, dynamic bass layers that play into the trance melodies, and more.

Melodic bass isn’t the only genre that Somna explored, as he turned the clock back to his earliest alias, Rodi Style, which was focused on harder styles of dance music. “System Failure” with Ramsey Westwood, “Wildfire,” “Keepsake,” and “Connected” kick everything up a notch in the latter half of the album, which is a welcome burst of energy after being embraced in a warm hug by the more emotion-stirring soundscapes in its earlier moments.

Throughout his journey on Pathways, Somna still remained grounded in trance and progressive house, the two genres that helped define his career thus far. You can get a dose of the uplifting nature of his style by putting on “Somewhere Dreams Come True” with Adara, “No Need To Hide” with Yang and MIDI Kittyy, “Side Road” with LTN, and “I’m Alive” with Andy Moor and Brienna Grace. Each of these tunes is brimming with his expansive signature soundscapes and showcases what makes his music memorable.
