Prince’s Purple Rain Musical Sets Broadway Opening for Spring 2027

More than two years after it was first announced, the stage adaptation of Prince‘s Purple Rain has officially found its Broadway home and will open in spring 2027. The musical will begin preview performances at New York City’s Majestic Theatre on March 12th, 2027, ahead of an official opening night on April 12th. The announcement arrives on the 42nd anniversary of the original Purple Rain film’s theatrical release and follows the production’s developmental world premiere in Minneapolis last year. Directed by Tony Award nominee Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club), the Broadway production features a newly revised book by Peter Duchan, choreography by Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams, and music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb. Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will also serve as music advisers. Based on Prince’s landmark 1984 film and its Grammy-winning soundtrack, Purple Rain follows The Kid, an ambitious young musician navigating family turmoil, artistic ambition, and romance while chasing success in Minneapolis’ club scene.
