Chicago-based indie singer/songwriter Maris O’Tierney spent much of the last decade recording with her twin sister as one half of indie folk duo Maeve & Quinn. Later this week, she is inaugurating a new artistic chapter with her debut album under the moniker Park Hills Circle, All of a Sudden.
The record finds O’Tierney in transition, returning to moments of comfort while reflecting on how time and growth has shifted her relationship to what was once deeply familiar. In a similar vein, the record’s sonics are full of atmospheric folk pop and lithe classical phrasings, alongside unexpected shades of jazz, entrancing loops, and synths. As O’Tierney describes, she was inspired by the intersection of her roots in both Irish folk storytelling and the expansive natural locales of her home state of Alaska. O’Tierney also worked alongside Aaron Otheim (synths/piano), Dustin Laurenzi (saxophone), Quin Kirchner (percussion), Matt Ulery (bass), and engineer Michael MacDonald to shape the sound of the record.
Today, ahead of the album’s release, Park Hills Circle is sharing a video for the title track, “All of a Sudden,” premiering on Under the Radar.
“All of a Sudden” swells between naturalistic chamber folk arrangements, operatic vocal performances, and sprawling instrumental expanses. O’Tierney’s collaborators fill the mix with meditative droning sax, echoing guitar harmonics, and cascading arpeggiated keys, letting each disparate part swirl together around O’Tierney’s crystalline vocals. The tide of instrumentation ebbs and flows with imperceptible ease, settling into a serene atmosphere midway through before steadily crescendoing to a gorgeous climax, guided by resolute guitar strums and dizzying jazz-tinged sax runs. O’Tierney gives the track subtle instrumental shades, but she leaves the emotions plain and direct, addressing an old love while offering a clear-eyed look a hopeful future ahead: “I still have the leaf you gave me / The autumn that you left / I still have the grief you gave me / But it’s not all I kept / On my own I know I’m home again.”
O’Tierney says of the video, “The concept for the video emerged from a candid and trusting creative conversation between new friends. While storyboarding a potential collaboration, Vishaal Desai (filmmaker, director, editor) and I connected over finding a sense of peace and well-being in the natural environment. We discovered in nature a shared reference for returning to strength and joy in oneself after a heavy period of loss or depression. The starting kernel was field footage of mountains and coastlines that I captured on my phone camera across fall, winter, and summer seasons in my home state of Alaska. My dear friend, and fellow musician, Molly Smallcomb and I then embarked on a summer solstice adventure in our current shared Chicago neighborhood to bring together embodied moments on film.
Molly and I built and explored from a shot list that Vishaal directed to organically and playfully improvise into the right moments. We chased the evening sun from our neighborhood park, lined with willow trees, to our local beach alongside Lake Michigan, golden hour colors in full radiance. Molly also shot video on her phone camera, which felt appropriately resourceful and in-the-moment for this collaboration.
I found myself moving through a sort of meditation across the scenes: turning gently with the willow trees in the breeze, and waltzing with the seagulls along the ocean-like lake. I felt free, at home in my body, and almost whimsical with the energy of my dear friend behind the camera. Vishaal’s editing and final composition of the film footage – collaging my field shots in Alaska with Molly’s scenes of me in Chicago – bring a cinematic pacing. The song and its emotional arc unfold and find in-time alignment with the different atmospheres in the natural world. I hope this video and song leave listeners/viewers with a feeling of groundedness: offering it as a balm for the spirit, for whatever needs healing or buoyancy”
