Well, shake it up baby, now. Twist and shout. Come on, come on, come on, come on baby, now. Come on and work it on out. As usual, that old-school rock 'n' roll spirit courses through Perennial's new single "Modernism," and so does bracing party-punk sass. The title track from the New England trio's new album has a lot going on despite its spry, minimal arrangement. Instruments enter and exit the frame all the time as Chelsey Hahn and Chad Jewitt trade off rallying cries over a pogo-punk beat. Both the craftsmanship and the energy level are remarkable.
Jewitt shared these words about the song:
The idea with "Modernism" was to have this sharp opening statement of purpose, but to also deconstruct the "fast garage rock" template. We’re a band that wishes we wrote "Kick Out The Jams" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in equal measure, so wherever there aren’t loud guitars there’s drum machine and mellotron and electric piano. A real technicolor punk thing.
Go, Johnny, go and listen below.
Modernism is out 9/18 on Ernest Jenning Record Co. Pre-order it here.
