Scottish-born Steven Hall was a fixture of the NYC underground in the '80s. He collaborated closely with Arthur Russell, and after Russell's death, he formed the tribute band Arthur's Landing. But beyond his association with Russell, Hall has been recording music as Nirosta Steel for decades, and only recently has that music gained widespread recognition.
A few weeks back, the Indiana/Mexico-based ULYSSA label released My Skyscraper, a new Nirosta Steel album comprising recordings from across the decades. The tracks vary widely in terms of genre and fidelity, manifesting in disparate strains of DIY dance and pop, each delivered with unpolished conviction and emotional transparency. Together, they add up to a compelling portrait of an unheralded artist.
My Skyscraper has been a sensation, inspiring rave reviews from outlets like Paste and Pitchfork and plenty of online clamor. Now Hall is ready to bring that excitement into the offline world with a pair of NYC live shows. The gigs will take place Thursday, Sept. 10 and Friday, Sept. 11 at Night Club 101. The first one will also feature Time Wharp and a Kassie Krut DJ set. The second show has Pleasure Systems and a DJ set from Chanel Beads, a big Nirosta Steel fan who first connected Hall with ULYSSA.
