Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto has seemingly shut down rumours of a Super Smash Bros. movie following the inclusion of Star Fox’s Fox McCloud in the Mario Galaxy Movie.
In the lead-up to the launch of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, character posters revealed that Pikmin, Fox McCloud and ‘80s gaming accessory R.O.B. would be appearing in the sequel.
Many fans assumed that Nintendo was setting up a movie adaptation of the Super Smash Bros. games, which see characters from across the Nintendo universe doing battle. However Miyamoto has dashed those hopes in a new interview.

“Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one movie]. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series,” he told Polygon.
“[This movie] really reaffirmed the varied nature of characters in the Mario world. We have plenty of characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a [few] secret cameos here and there.”
“When you use the term universe, it conjures up this idea that there’s a group of really smart people in a room with charts up on a wall and they’re planning the next 10 years of how all the characters might be weaving in and out of movies. Our process is actually very different from that,” added Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri. “It’s much more geared toward conversations about what would be fun within a certain scene in the movie. If we agree that it’s a fun idea, then we look to Miyamoto-san to just make his own judgment about whether or not it feels right to him, but it’s much more incidental than strategic.”
Following the success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the tech giant was “building a framework” for future movie adaptations and wanted a “consistent release” of blockbusters. A live-action The Legend Of Zelda film is due to launch next year and there are reports Donkey Kong is set to get his own spin-off movie.
The inclusion of Fox McCloud in the Mario Galaxy Movie reportedly comes ahead of a brand new Star Fox game that is rumoured to launch later this year for the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside a remake of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
In other news, one Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan has created a video game to try and save the cancelled New Sunnydale reboot.
