I Can See follows Hakim's 2022 album Cometa, and was developed over five years during an uncertain period in his life marked by the end of a record deal and a long-term relationship. The album’s title track and new single — which arrives today after previous singles "Real Here Now" and "Water" — took four years alone to finish.
Speaking about the single, Hakim shares, "I can't imagine beginning this album without this track. It’s the entry point of this collection of songs. This took 4 years to finish. It felt like an experiment of how time moves, and we change, but how you can retain a feeling from the sound or tone of music you've made or love. The initial demo of this song took 20 minutes to make, but the patience and time it took to "finish" was worth every moment."
I Can See was initially born out of bedroom demos before taking full form at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and in various New York studios. The album features longtime collaborators, including Andrew Sarlo (Dijon, Bon Iver), and was mastered by Heba Kadry (Björk, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gorillaz), with the songs exploring moments of clarity, conversations with loved ones who have passed, and the fragility of love.
Hakim is currently scheduled to kick off a North American tour on 17 September in Washington, D.C., to be followed by an EU/UK leg which will include dates in Dublin, Glasgow, London, Birmingham, Paris and Berlin.
