Neurosis Return with New Singer, First New Album in a Decade, and First Show in Seven Years

Foundational post-metal band Neurosis have returned with a new singer, a surprise new album, and the announcement of their first show in seven years.

Their return includes a reunion show at this year’s Fire in the Mountains festival, as well as the album featuring new member Aaron Turner of the bands ISIS, SUMAC, and Old Man Gloom. Turner replaces founding member Scott Kelly on guitar and vocals.

The band’s new album, An Undying Love for a Burning World, is its first in 10 years, and can be heard in its entirety below, with pre-orders for physical copies available here. It showcases a sound splitting the difference between Neurosis and early ISIS, with a greater prominence of psychedelic and industrial elements.

Regarding Turner’s involvement, the group stated, “He came straight out of the gate contributing, writing and presenting ideas. His energy matches ours perfectly. It’s as if he was always meant to be there.”

Turner concurred, adding, “From the moment I first heard Neurosis over 30 years ago, I felt this was the music my heart and mind had been seeking but not yet heard. Now after many years traveling along various musical paths of my own, the singular sound and spirit embodied by Neurosis continues to speak to the depths of my being.”

Neurosis had been inactive inactive since 2019. Their hiatus was spurred by revelation of familial abuse by founding member Kelly, leading to his quiet expulsion from the group and the immediate cessation of band activities.

Of the impetus behind reuniting to create a new record, the band stated, “We need this, perhaps more than ever, and we suspect we are not alone. … This was now or never.”

That their return would come as a headlining date at a major genre festival like Fire From the Mountains is no surprise. To describe Neurosis as one of the most pivotal groups of underground and experimental heavy music of the past 30 years would be a vast understatement. Their influence has been cited far and wide, from Converge to Slipknot to Mastodon to Baroness.

Neurosis will be joined by Baroness, YOB, Enslaved, Sixteen Horsepower, Amigo the Devil, and more at the Fire From the Mountains fest, which takes place July 23rd-26th at Red Eagle Campground in East Glacier, Montana. A full lineup can be seen  in poster below, while tickets are available here.
