OurHome was recorded in Japan and self-produced by Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero at NK Sound Tokyo, and follows their 2023 album, In Between Thoughts... A New World. The new album is hinted to be a new chapter for the pair, with new single "Monster" arriving as the first taster, accompanied by a music video created by manga artist Naoki Urasawa, author of Monster, 20th Century Boys and Pluto. The track was inspired by Urasawa’s psychological thriller.
Speaking about the single, Quintero explains, “Monster is such a deep, philosophical story – it’s about a psychopathic killer, but it’s so uplifting and leaves you with a real sense of hope. We’d written that track without knowing that Urasawa was a fan of ours, and now he’s made the video for us.”
Urasawa, who discovered the duo through their live performances years before the collaboration, adds: “When artists I admire that much bring you an offer like that, there’s no way you can say no. The completed track, ‘Monster’, not only perfectly captures the mood of my work, but the duo’s guitar playing also transports us to an entirely different and elevated dimension.”
OurHome first came together after the pair spent months feeling creatively stuck at their studio in Ixtapa, but found a sense of direction following the passing of their studio cat, Pelusa. “The day after she died, Rod wrote a song for Pelusa and suddenly everything started to flow,” says Quintero. “It was like she was telling us, ‘Stop fucking around and just do what you do best’ – which meant playing from our hearts with no agenda.”
The title OurHome came from a walk through Melbourne, when the duo passed a public housing tower bearing a sign with the same words. Discussing the meaning of "home" to them and the album's purpose, Quintero says, “To us home means finding peace within yourself instead of seeking external approval. We made this album to celebrate what helps us to find that home within ourselves, and we hope it inspires everyone to figure out what home means to them.”
The record features collaborators including former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, Japanese jazz pianist Hiromi, cellist Hiyori Okuda and guitarist Yukihiro Atsumi. It was mixed by Dave Sardy (The Who, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and mastered by Stephen Marcussen (Nirvana, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones). Rodrigo y Gabriela are currently set to bring the songs to the stage with a tour of North America from September, with UK and Ireland dates scheduled for March 2027 including stops in Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London.
