Metallica wrapped up their three-year “M72 World Tour” earlier this month, and now have turned their focus on their upcoming residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere. As Lars Ulrich tells The Edge in a new interview, the band is taking inspiration from U2, who were the first act to play the futuristic venue.
The legendary metal act is set to perform 24 shows at the Sphere as part of the “Life Burns Faster” residency running from October 1st, 2026, through March 13th, 2027. Tickets are available here, with 20% off your first order of $200 or more using the code CONSEQUENCE20.
The Metallica drummer appeared as the latest guest on the U2 guitarist’s “Close to the Edge” program, with his full interview set to premiere Friday, July 17th, at 7 p.m. ET on SiriusXM’s U2 X-Radio (Ch. 32), with replays throughout the upcoming week.
Coming off the thee-year tour, Ulrich told The Edge, “We’ll take a couple weeks to chill out, but then we got to start thinking about scaling the Sphere mountain and conquering that. And it’s been in the works. We’ve been working on this for a year, year and a half. And certainly thank you to you guys. You know, I was there opening night and was so just fucking awestruck, inspired, energized, all of it. And it was just like, ‘Holy shit, this is somehow another frontier.’ This is, you know, we’re all fortunate enough to be able to do these shows, to connect with these audiences, to play with the configuration, and to sort of reinvent the staging and all of it, all the time. But this is something else. This is another level. And so to be able to do that here is so exciting.”
The drummer added, “And, obviously you guys were the first ones in, and it was just so incredible to see that night. And, so in that spirit, three years later, when we start here in a few months, we’re so excited, and definitely have heard from a few folks about the filming and all of it. And it’ll be, it’s going to be challenging, and obviously, I think like everybody else I’ve talked to about it’s overwhelming and fucking intimidating. But hopefully when we step out on stage that first night, we’ll have it somewhat together. So and that’s also, as you know, that’s a place maybe we don’t end up in often enough because we have a tendency to put ourselves in environments that we completely control and know. And so I think it’s really good to be able to throw yourself for the loop like that.”
