Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich is the latest guest on “Close to the Edge,” the SiriusXM series hosted by U2 guitarist The Edge on U2 X-Radio (Ch. 32).
On the show, The Edge sits down with musicians, artists, and creative thinkers to explore the ideas, relationships, and experiences that shape their work. In this new episode, Lars reflects on Metallica’s four-plus decades together and explains why the band’s differences have been one of its greatest strengths.
Asked whether the contrasting personalities of himself and frontman James Hetfield are central to Metallica’s success, Lars says each member brings something unique to the table.
“I would like to think so,” Lars says. “I would like to think that we each bring a different energy, and a different focus, and a different… skill set.”
Now more than 45 years into their partnership, Lars says he and Hetfield know each other inside and out despite coming from very different backgrounds.
“I’d like to think that the differences that all of us bring and the different influences, inspirations, and the way we grew up… is what makes this work,” he says.
