"open fields" follows previous singles "mirabel" and "sojourn" as a slow rise and fall of harps, showing a different side of a collection of songs that see Somogyi chronicle her experience of grief and healing.
Speaking about how the song came together, Somogyi says, “Recording 'open fields' felt almost entirely subconscious,I had one of those experiences where time disappeared while my hands kept moving. I often come to understand time by moving through it with a feeling instead of measuring it and also feel my greatest sense of peace through movement. As a harpist, letting my fingers move instinctively through cascading arpeggios is one of the most natural states I know. 'open fields' is an invitation to enter that space, where time isn't measured so much as felt."
