Irish firebrands Kneecap will join a humanitarian flotilla to Cuba, writing in an Instagram post, “Next week, we will join the Nuestra América Convoy to Cuba, delivering critical aid to the Cuban people.”
Cuba had long depended on Russia and a small network of communist countries to survive American sanctions. But after the Trump administration deposed Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Cuba was cut-off from its primary source of oil, and the country has descended into a humanitarian crisis. The Nuestra América Convoy, founded by an alumnus of the Gaza flotilla, is hoping to deliver (a relatively small number of) supplies while bringing global attention to the plight of the Cuban people. The convoy is scheduled to arrive in Cuba March 21st.
Kneecap wrote, “The Trump administration is strangling the island, cutting off fuel, flights, and critical supplies for survival. It’s time to break the siege — and stand up for Cuba, as they have stood up for us.” These latter words are a reference to the historical alliance between Cuban revolutionaries and the IRA. The post ends with a quote from Ernesto Guevara Lynch, the father of ‘Che’ Guevara who himself had Irish ancestry: “In my son’s veins flowed the blood of Irish rebels.” Check out the post below.
Kneecap’s vociferous support for Palestine led the UK government to charge member Mo Chara with a bullshit terror offense. Though the charges were eventually dropped, it did force the group to cancel their North American tour.
Kneecap’s upcoming album FENIAN will be released April 24th, and pre-orders are ongoing.
