Flea stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night perform a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You,” a song that appears on his upcoming debut solo album Honora.
With moving strings and a soft approach, Flea and his band provided a romantic, yearning rendition of the Frank Ocean classic. Flea played both his usual bass guitar and a trumpet, taking on the song’s chorus and bridge with the latter. The performance demonstrated Flea’s excellence on brass, bass, and as a bandleader, but it also hammered home how great of a song “Thinkin Bout You” is even on just an instrumental level. Watch Flea’s performance below.
Flea also sat down for an interview with Fallon ahead of his musical segment. He primarily addressed the bandage he was sporting on his forehead, initially explaining that he got it after a fight in which he took on four criminals. He then admitted that story was fabricated, and claimed the bandage actually came from a “bizarre peeing accident.”
While performing on Apple Music, he had to pee in the middle of his set: “I run down the hallway, I pee, I’m wearing my reading glasses, I yell something to someone — I’m running at full sprint down the hallway, mind you — and BAM! [I] smack into a glass door, flat on my back, blood spurtin’ out of my head… I’m laying there, and I’m going ‘Oh man, I’ve got to do the Fallon show in a couple of days… I’ll tell him I got in a fight!'” said Flea. He went on to discuss Honora, how jazz and his early years playing the trumpet inspired him, and more. Watch the interview clip below.
Honora, Flea’s first-ever solo album, is out on Friday, March 27th. He’s previewed the album so far with the aforementioned cover of “Thinkin Bout You” along with earlier singles “A Plea” and the Thom Yorke-featuring “Traffic Lights.” Flea will head out on a brief tour of North America and Europe in support of Honora; see his tour dates below and get tickets here.
