Eddy Current Suppression Ring Release New Surprise Album In Light Of Recent Events

Look who's back! For decades, Melbourne's Eddy Current Suppression Ring have been cult heroes on the global garage rock underground, but the band hasn't been all that active in recent years. After cranking out three exciting albums between 2008 and 2010, the band took a years-long hiatus before returning with 2019's All In Good Time. Now, six years after that, they've ended another hiatus with the surprise release of their fifth LP In Light Of Recent Events. I'm on my first listen right now, but I can confidently say that this one is worth your time even if you're not familiar with their past work.

The return of Eddy Current Suppression Ring has been a long time coming. Last year, the band got together for practices, and they played some secret shows under different names. In July 2025, they released the three-song EP Shapes And Forms. (None of those tracks appear on In Light Of Recent Events.) In September, they played a massive free show in Melbourne's Fed Square.

On In Light Of Recent Events, the band plays with real rock 'n' roll muscle and focus, but there's an oblique, quizzical element to their style that remains entirely theirs. The riffs and the hooks get your blood pumping, but the band never settles for anything cliché. Their sound is psychedelic without making a big point of its idiosyncrasies, and it makes anxiety and exhilaration sound like two sides of the same coin. Listen to the new LP below.

The self-released In Light Of Recent Events is out now.
