With the recent release of Iceman, Maid Of Honour, and Habibti, Drake became the first artist to hold the top three albums on the Billboard 200 chart. Now, the world-dominating rapper is claiming nine songs in the Top 10, and his interpolation of Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers" earned her her first Hot 100 credit at #1.
Drake previously sampled the Swedish singer on his 2009 mixtape So Far Gone, borrowing from her Youth Novels track "Little Bit." It's the Iceman song "Janice STFU" that interpolates "I Follow Rivers" from her 2011 LP Wounded Rhymes. "I think it's potent. It has that raw, revenge, hip-hop energy," Li told Rolling Stone about the Drake song.
"I Follow Rivers" is her biggest hit, which blew up astronomically when Belgian DJ/producer the Magician released a remix. "I mean, it is the most mysterious, incredible gift of my career because it's had so many lives and different iterations," she said. "With certain songs, there's an alchemy or symmetry to them that allows them to have their own life in the world. And as a songwriter, that's the greatest wish. I'm so grateful and blessed to have one of those songs that doesn’t even belong to me. It has a life of its own."
In the interview, which was published the day after the Drake drop, she revealed she hadn't yet listened to the albums but had been listening to old stuff: "Strangely enough, I've been really craving Drake and have actually been listening to Marvin's Room lately. The old Drake was such an era. When you'd walk into a room and they'd play 'Hotline Bling.' … So yeah, I was missing him."
As for Drake occupying nine spots out of the Top 10, it's Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" that's blocking him from a complete takeover. Diss track incoming? Still, Drake is breaking a lot of records at the moment, per Billboard. With "Janice STFU" at #1, Drake has surpassed Michael Jackson's record for most #1s by a solo male artist on the singles chart. With the nine spots in the Top 10, he's achieved an unprecedented career total of 90 Top 10 songs.
What else? A new single-week record of 42 songs on the Hot 100. (The albums altogether consist of 43 songs. What's missing is the 42-second "Where's Your Stuff Interlude.") For that, he beat Morgan Wallen's recent record of 37. Drake is also the first-ever act to have amassed more than 400 career entries on the chart. That's a lot!
