Deborah Ann Woll, the star of God Of War: Laufey, has responded to the backlash over a female protagonist leading a new God Of War game.

Set alongside the 2018 God Of War reboot, Laufey will follow Kratos’ wife through the afterlife following her death at the start of that game. “Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk,” reads an official description of the game. “To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”

However, a vocal minority of fans aren’t happy that Kratos isn’t the main character of a new God Of War game. Laufey actor Deborah Ann Woll was asked about the backlash while appearing at a fan convention. “Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it,” she told a fan. “But one, I’m not on social media so that helps. And two, I feel totally unbothered because I know it’s great. It’s fine if it’s not your cup of tea but in no universe is it bad.”

“They just hate to see a woman win,” replied the fan, who shared the interaction on TikTok. “I know, they can’t do it,” replied Woll.

Studio boss Cory Barlog has also addressed the backlash. “While [God Of War: Laufey] is a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore [with] all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history,” he explained in an interview. Sony Santa Monica also took to X to reassure fans that “Kratos is [still] the God Of War,” and they have “many more stories to tell with him.”

God Of War: Laufey doesn’t have a release date but it will launch at some point before the end of 2027.
