Dawn Richard has announced her new album, Creole Culture, due out October 9th via Merge Records. The New Orleans multidisciplinary artist has also revealed the project’s latest single, “enough.” Stream it below. Creole Culture is Richard’s love letter to her hometown, the latest iteration of her relationship with the location after 2019’s New Breed and 2021’s Second Line. “Creole Culture is my way of saying that New Orleans culture doesn’t have to live in the past to be authentic,” Richard reflected in a press release. “It can be progressive. It can be global. It can be pop culture. It can look like me.” Per the release, Creole Culture is “steeped in history but with its flag planted firmly in the future,” pulling elements from Richard’s heritage as a Black and Native American woman with a lifetime spent making music. In Richard’s eyes, the album is the latest installment of a fully-realized sonic and narrative universe in which she, as King Creole, re-fashions and re-constructs her hometown in her image. “enough” is adornment in aural form; in addition to exalting her city for everything it has offered her, the artist also finds time to home in on the basics.
