Metallic hardcore legends Converge have surprised fans by announcing Hum of Hurt, their second full-length album of the year. Ahead of its June 5th release, the slightly NSFW music video for the title track can be seen below.
The album was recorded during the same sessions as their previous album from this year, Love Is Not Enough, which was released in February. The band clarified, however, that it is not a sequel album but a distinct and separate work.

Vocalist Jacob Bannon explained, “To me, it leans more into being an emotional hardcore album, while Love Is Not Enough feels more metal leaning album. In the end, we simply gave creative birth to another Converge record with its own unique identity and character.”
Alongside the album announcement, the group has also released the title track as the first single from the upcoming album. It is a propulsive and quite dynamic piece, containing the range we associate with Converge, including a three-vocalist interplay over the course of the song. This is in sharp contrast to the pummeling and quite direct metallic hardcore of the previous album.
The band also offered insight into the overall creative ethos that created these two distinct works. Bannon said, “The unifying musical idea early on was, ‘Let’s make a noise rock album.’ But we never really did.”
The album itself is loosely based around a real-world phenomenon called “The Hum,” an unexplained low-frequency noise heard everywhere from Ipswitch, Massachusetts, to Auckland, New Zealand, to all over the UK.
Regarding the inspiration, Bannon said, “What if ‘The Hum’ is the culmination of all the pain in the world, creating an audible signal across the universe? Something noticeable to others operating on a similar emotional plane.”
