The veteran singer-songwriter Carly Simon hasn't performed live since a 2018 Tibet House benefit at Carnegie Hall, and she hasn't released an album of new songs since 2008's This Kind Of Love. She did not attend her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 2022. Last month, however, Simon announced a new album called Comes In Waves, and she shared the lead single "Howl." Now, Simon has revealed the reason for her return: She's dealing with Parkinson's disease and the form of skin cancer known as basal cell carcinoma. If she's going to release any more music, she has to do it now.The 83-year-old Simon revealed her diagnoses in a letter that she posted on Instagram. In that statement, she writes bravely and candidly about the effects of Parkinson's, a degenerative condition that can be treated but not cured. (My dad died of Parkinson's. It fucking sucks.) She also says that her appearance has been affected since the skin cancer was removed from her face: "I have always been more critical of my appearance than anyone else could possibly imagine (check out the irony of having written 'You’re So Vain.'), and this gave my inner critic quite a lot of new material."
