Angelo Badalamenti’s Blue Velvet Score Gets 40th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue

Forty years after David Lynch’s Blue Velvet changed the sound of American cinema forever, Angelo Badalamenti‘s haunting score is returning to vinyl.

Arriving September 4th via Varèse Sarabande, the anniversary reissue features the soundtrack’s original 14-track sequence in a rainbow-foil jacket, alongside several limited-edition colored-vinyl variants. The label will also release the soundtrack on CD and as a new 48-track deluxe digital edition packed with previously unavailable cues and score excerpts. Pre-orders are available now.

The 1986 film marked the beginning of Badalamenti’s decades-long creative partnership with Lynch after the composer was initially hired as Isabella Rossellini’s vocal coach. When Lynch asked him to write “a song that floats on the sea of time,” the pair created “Mysteries of Love,” performed by Julee Cruise. The collaboration ultimately expanded into Badalamenti scoring the entirety of Blue Velvet, launching one of cinema’s most lasting director-composer partnerships. They would go on to collaborate on Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and several other projects, with Badalamenti earning a Grammy for the Twin Peaks theme.

Blending ethereal lounge music, unsettling orchestral passages, and unforgettable songs like Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams,” the Blue Velvet soundtrack became as important to the film’s atmosphere as Lynch’s imagery. The score has since been recognized among the greatest film soundtracks ever made.

The vinyl edition includes Badalamenti’s original score alongside Bill Doggett’s “Honky Tonk Part 1,” Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams,” Ketty Lester’s “Love Letters,” and Julee Cruise’s vocal version of “Mysteries of Love.” Meanwhile, the digital deluxe edition expands the release to 48 tracks with alternate cues, score fragments, and previously unreleased material drawn from the film’s sessions.
