1985 Music Celebrates 10 Years with a Massive Compilation

1985 Music gives fans 20 more reasons to respect the imprint, with artists like Monty, Drone, Lenzman, Hijinx, Simula, and more contributing to X Years VA.

If you were to ask a room full of electronic music heads which labels are their top, you’d hear a wide variety, but the majority would mention 1985 Music as one of their top five. Why? Because over their 10 years of music creation and curation, this imprint has brought forth some of the scene’s most memorable and influential artists we know and love today.

The label boss, Alix Perez, built 1985 Music from the ground up and created an entirely different lane of music that, as mentioned before, gives so many amazing artists a platform to showcase their skills. Because of the label’s niche sound, artists like Skeptical, Halogenix, Monty, Visages, and CESCO have all found a home there.

A decade-long run is a milestone worth celebrating: all the sold-out takeovers, influential albums, insane collaborations, and community built over that span of time could honestly be added to a world record book. In true 1985 Music fashion, the annual anniversary compilation was anticipated to be one of the best yet, especially after the four lead-up tracks were dropped, including a rare remix of the legendary track “All I Know” by Visages.

Within this 20-track compilation, you will find all of the sounds that represent 1985 Music from year one to now. It’s like walking through a time capsule. There’s a little bit of everything fans love about the creative vision the label has always centered in its ethos, plus some new elements, as expected. So let’s get to the fun part and dive into some of the tracks!

X Years of 1985 – a special project featuring 20 tracks that encapsulate the label’s current sonic standing. We’re proud of this collection of music that marks a milestone. A big thanks to all the artists involved and those who have supported us throughout our journey.

1985 Music

A decade of trailblazing is wrapped up in one package, X Years VA, and it’s been delivered right to your doorstep.

The compilation opens with Pruvan’s “Halls.” It’s the lead track for a reason: its slow entrance builds anticipation, then throws you into the label’s favorite sporadic energy filled with kicks and thunderous echoes. It feels fitting to do “Lightning Bolt” by Drone next. We fall into a punchy uptempo beat that generates as much heat as an atmospheric electrical discharge.

Let there be breakbeats, said Thematic, probably when he created “Ride Out.” This playful beat will have you breaking more than your beats on the dancefloor with its infectious energy. “Jack It” comes in with its chest puffed thanks to GLM and Verbz. We love a good lyrical genius spitting grimey truths over a hard beat, and so does 1985 Music.

Time to get flowy with Fox, Lenzman, and Satl‘s “We Blessy” and GLXY‘s “Smile for Me.” Liquid drum and bass has always been one of the label’s staple sounds, and these artists understood the assignment with fun, uplifting soundscapes and some buttery vocals to match. Press play and see if you agree.

The label boss himself had to join in the fun, of course, with his two tracks, “Reminisce” and “Combination Style.” One showcases his liquid DnB expertise, which is my favorite version of Alix, while the other explores his love for the experimental elements. A true representation of his incredible duality.

Up next, Simula comes in from the depths of the underworld on “Pressure Wave.” Gnarly warbled frequencies disorient the room. Last but not least, Monty closes out the compilation with massive energy on “Rougher Sound.” This track ends the chapter with what most 1985 Music fans crave at any event: the anticipatory build-up met with an explosion of dnb-controlled chaos.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg with X Years VA; there are still plenty of tracks left unturned for you to explore yourself and report back to us on which one was your standout track. Through and through, this compilation perfectly encapsulates the energy 1985 Music has compiled over its incredible 10 years in the scene. Cheers to their legacy, we can’t wait to see what the next decade will have in store.
